About 116 kilometres in eight stages
The Malerweg Elbe Sandstone Mountains covers about 116 kilometres in eight stages through Saxon Switzerland. The complete route links Pirna-Liebethal with Pirna, while a stay in Königstein also lets you choose one section for a day hike.
A landscape that inspired artists
For centuries, the cliffs, gorges and viewpoints of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains have attracted artists. Today’s Malerweg takes up this tradition and connects familiar landscape motifs along one continuously waymarked trail.
Königstein and stage seven
Stage seven runs from Kurort Gohrisch across Pfaffenstein and Quirl to Königstein, then past the foot of the fortress and through Thürmsdorf to Weißig. The official section is 16.6 kilometres long and demanding; the Nadelöhr ascent in particular is narrow and steep. Allow extra time if you plan to visit the fortress.
Highlights along the route
The Bastei Bridge and Rathen, the Kuhstall and Kirnitzsch valley, and the Affensteine and Schrammsteine appear on different stages. This makes it possible to choose a section that suits your experience, fitness and the weather instead of planning the complete multi-day route.
Plan the return journey too
Plan your outward journey, walking time and return connection together. For stage seven, the official route information lists buses to the start at Kurort Gohrisch and rail or bus connections near the stage finish. Before every walk, check current timetables, trail notices, diversions and closures.
